London 2012: McNeil, Bannister miss finals

ALPHINGTON'S David McNeil failed to make the final of the men's 5000 metres, finishing 13th in the heats with a time of 13:45.88.

The heat was won by Hayle Ibrahimov from Azerbaijan, who was more than 20 seconds quicker than McNeil with a time of 13:25.23. The first five from the heat qualified. McNeil can take solace in the fact he beat the other Australian Collis Birmingham, who was 17th in the same heat in 13:50.39.

East Brunswick's Jarrod Bannister failed to make the final of the men's javelin throw, his best throw of 77.38 metres only enough for 13th in the group B qualification round.

That round was won easily by Czech Republic's Vitezslav Vesely, who only needed one throw of 88.34 metres, a personal best, to make it through to the final.
