FOOD trucks are coming to the City of Yarra. New council by-laws permitting food trucks to come into the area came into effect this month.
News of the permits, which will cost $2000 – or $1500 concession – annually, was spread widely on social media website Twitter on Monday.
Beatbox Kitchen and Taco Truck operator Rafael Rashid, who has applied for a permit, said permit conditions would make trading in Yarra difficult as it stipulates trucks must be positioned at least 200 metres from established businesses and can use only one location.
However, he added the area's young and diverse population could make food trucks popular.
The council voted in February to introduce permits despite claims from cafe and restaurant owners that food vans would take away their business.
Many food trucks have big followings, with social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook used to update consumers about locations and menus.
