Travel a low point for step up to high school

20 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
TWINS Phoebe and Huw Porter finish primary school this week and, like other 12-year-olds, feel a mix of trepidation and excitement about the transition to high school.

Next year the two Coburg residents – with no nearby all-access high school – will travel south to Brunswick to attend school.

They are among the Coburg youths forced to commute to start year 7 in 2012.

Their mother Julie Porter said she was happy with the Brunswick school, but was disappointed the lack of local choice.

"Literally, we had no choice as to where to send the kids … if there was a Coburg high school for them it would have been great," she said.

High School for Coburg co-founder Cate Hall said Coburg was an "education black hole".

"There are 22 local primary schools, including Catholic schools, but then nowhere for this kids to go (to attend high school)," she said.

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development spokesman Stuart Teather said the department had regular meetings with High School for Coburg.

A final meeting for the year

between the department and High School for Coburg to discuss possible solutions was held last week.

The access to education in the Coburg area is shocking - many of us are terrified of our options as the numbers of kids increase and the area grows. It looks more and more like there won't be places for my own two boys (boys especially have problems) many of us know people who don't have access to the schools their children want to go to - this separates friends and is devastating for parenting networks of support etc. especially for single parents. We can only hope that the government takes this issue seriously as the community backlash is continuously growing and the numbers of affected grow.

If a High School IS opened in Coburg it would have an unparalleled level of parent support. They don't call Coburg the Teachers Belt for nothing. I love Coburg so much and would love my kids to be able to go to High School locally, rather than have to move into an apartment to get into the zone of Princes Hill or Northcote. I want a High School for Coburg and I vote!
