It’s generally accepted that the Yarra River is full of some murky stuff, but did you know it includes a 100-year-old sewer syphon in Abbotsford? Neither did we.
Yarra Valley Water is working on a $2.7 million project to replace the syphon and keep the water flowing.
The syphon was built in 1911 by miners and connects the sewerage network on either side of the river.
Yarra Valley Water managing director Tony Kelly said the original syphon was critical to the city’s development early last century. Construction on the replacement is expected to be completed by the end of March.
