Students make lasting change in Brunswick

29 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
A GROUP of university students have banded together to convert a barren block of land near the Brunswick train station into a community-friendly space.

The site, near the station's east platform is a graffiti hotspot. As part of their IMPRINT project the students are investigating additions such as more trees, better lighting, public seating and basketball hoops.

The students recently held a public forum to discuss ideas for the site and have approached Brunswick MLA Jane Garrett, Moreland City Council and Metro.

IMPRINT member Jonathan Chen, a first year science student at the University of Melbourne, said the goal was to rally the community to transform the space.

He said at the moment the area was "pretty much a wasteland", but the goal of IMPRINT was to make the site safer, more attractive and encourage community use, he said.

The University of Melbourne gave the project $2500 and the students are now seeking greater sponsorship and community involvement.

The group is a member of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), an organisation that encourages students to make a difference in their local area.
