My Voice: The Fauna Fighters

21 Feb, 2012 09:18 AM
Two residents of Melbourne’s inner city have donned Lycra and taken to the streets to raise awareness for animal activism. Meet The Fauna Fighters.

I AM Thylacine, a masked animal-activist working in Melbourne with my partner Flying Fox. Yes, that’s right, masked activists. Comic book characters brought to life in the quest to make the world a better place for animals of all kinds.

The decision to become The Fauna Fighters was the result of a lifetime as comic book fans blended with a passion for animal liberation and activism. It’s works like Alan Moore’s Watchmen that made us who we are, but our desire to help the animal kingdom that gave us our direction in what we do.

Flying Fox chose her name because of their mysterious nature and dark beauty. I chose to embrace the Thylacine to avenge what I consider one of the world’s most sadly persecuted animals. Through Fauna Fighters, the thylacine walks again!

We don’t consider ourselves “superheroes”. We’re neither heroes, nor super. We’re everyday people trying to raise awareness for animal activism. There are dozens of true unsung heroes such as the fantastic Lort Smith Animal Hospital working hard for animals.

If anything, we’re here to show you that anyone can go forth and help their community if they want to. It takes nothing but a decision to go out and do it!

Our biggest wins have been the massive amounts of trash we’ve managed to get off the streets. We’ve inspired people also to explore vegetarianism and we’ve brought both monetary and promotional support to pro-animal groups we admire.

We ourselves are vegans, and along with our urban clean-ups we consider it our strongest contribution.
