Carlton resident Margaret Birtley rides to work every day. She’s encouraging others to do the same on October 12, which is Ride to Work day.I cycled to work through most of the 1980s, when working close enough to home. Then, after too long travelling by car, I was able to start cycling again in 2008, and have kept it going ever since.
I now ride to work every day, from Carlton to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The distance is just under four kilometres from home to office.
I’m able to store a couple of pairs of shoes and a few jackets at work, so I ride in my work clothes plus cross-trainer shoes and a reflective jacket. Once at work I change shoes and add a jacket.
I love the flexibility that bike travel offers. You can easily detour for small chores on the way to and from work. I use bike paths and lanes wherever I can, and am a great fan of the Copenhagen-style lanes.
I use my bike during the day to attend appointments outside the office, if practical. The William Barak Bridge between the MCG and Federation Square gives me a direct connection through to Swanston Street if I’m heading to the city or Melbourne University, or to St Kilda Road if the meeting is in that direction.
I appreciate the way my daily commute give me a good 30 minutes of exercise each day. There are sufficient hills and dales between Carlton and East Melbourne to lift my heart rate on each journey.
On the weekends, I use the bike for every trip I can – shopping, catching up with friends, and into the city.
