MY HANG has been running the milkbar at the bottom of 140 Neill Street in the Carlton housing estate for 13 years.
Business is not exactly booming but Mrs Hang says it’s enough for her and her husband to live on. One thing’s for certain: they don’t want to give it up, and customers don’t want them to either. ‘‘We have been here a long time, so we know plenty of customers,’’ Mrs Hang says.
The future of the popular milkbar is uncertain, as an approved upgrade of the foyer will force the milkbar to shut down or move. Two consultation sessions earlier this month confi rmed tenants want a milkbar in the revamped building.
They also suggested opening a cafe or other business to employ tenants, or a community library. A new milkbar would be put out to tender, meaning the Hangs’ place was not guaranteed.
Construction of a new foyer, expected to start early next year, will force the milkbar to close for an unknown period of time.
In recent plans the milkbar, which now faces Rathdowne Street, would be moved to the new site as soon as possible to minimise period of closure.
