A Docklands pad without the price tag

A Docklands pad without the price tag

16 Aug, 2011 04:00 AM
THE first tenants have moved into a new social housing complex in Docklands, with the accommodation designed to alleviate demand for affordable housing close to the CBD.

The $39 million housing complex is the second to open in Docklands and will provide an extra 86 affordable apartments – including seven customised disability units – as well as 28 privately owned units.

Housing Choices Australia will manage the project. HCA chief executive Michael Lennon said he was keen to expand the amount of affordable housing in Docklands over time.

"There is a huge undersupply of affordable housing across Melbourne and especially across the central city," he said.

The complex will cater for lower-income families and workers, people with disabilities and seniors, he said, adding

that there was evidence the apartments would also benefit the homeless and people living in overcrowded premises.

Tenant Logan Kershaw, 37, said his new one-bedroom apartment was fantastic.

"It's opposite Harbour Town. It's a perfect location – it couldn't be better," he said.

Mr Kershaw has been on a pension since a severe motorbike accident.

He signed up with HCA to find long-term accommodation after stints in transitional housing.

"It's great to know if I want to stay here forever, I can."

The complex received $22.9 million under the Australian Government's Social Housing Initiative.

Chris - I meet an executive from Perth who thought her pad was so cheap because of an oversupply. She thinks it's absolutely fabulous having something so good so close to the city.
